23rd April – Ben Sands appeared as our guest on this date. A member of the celebrated Sands family from Newry, County Down, Ben performed mostly solos but was joined in some tunes by his wife Barbara on bodhran. He is an excellent raconteur and his stories, songs and tunes on guitar, mandolin and cittern gave us an evening of variety. 28th May – A guest Night is to be held during the Haddington Festival, featuring Sinsheen (Christine Kydd and Barbara Dymock). Christine has previously appeared as a guest at the club, partnered by Janet Russell. The new pairing has received excellent reviews and promises to be a not-to-be missed experience. We have requested that the festival committee include this gig in the festival programme. 6th August – The club had booked the Russian song and dance group Dreva (see above) in August. We enjoyed having Oreja, another eastern European group in 2004, and this was a chance to once again extend the boundaries of our entertainment. The gig was to a joint venture between the Railway Hotel management and the Folk Club, as obviously a larger venue was required. However Dreva has been forced to cancel its tour as work permits have not been granted. 10th September – Leading us up to our Silver Jubilee, our booking team has managed to persuade Alan Taylor to appear as a special guest. One of the leading singer/songwriter/instrumentalists of both the British and International folk scenes, his songs have been covered by such greats as Dick Gaughan, Barbara Dickson, Frankie Miller, Francoise Hardy and Fairport Convention. Alan has recorded over 24 best selling albums. 20th September 2008 – The committee has selected this date for the Haddington Folk Club’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. The Railway Hotel Haddington is the chosen venue and we hope the event will take the form of a re-union of as many past regulars as possible. If you came along to the club on a regular basis during its stay at The Mercat / The Pheasant / The Victoria Inn / The Toll Bridge, and would like to attend, please contact Gordon or Peter (see below) by 20th August to receive an official invitation. If you can’t make it please send us a message to let everyone know how you’re getting on and if you are still into folk music. The event will also feature music sessions, an evening open stage and a concert with special guests who have strong Haddington Folk Club Connections. As well as a message board we will have photographs on display taken during the 25 years of the clubs existance - we would be grateful for copies of pictures taken at the club that you may have, e-mailed to us for this display.
